The World Showcase Lagoon at Epcot ®
Amid cascades of multicolored fireworks and swirling laser lights, 350 American Geriatrics Society members and supporters packed the AGS Foundation's "Evening with Friends" benefit in May.
One of the highlights of the 2005 AGS annual meeting, "Evening with Friends" was held on a private terrace overlooking The World Showcase Lagoon at Epcot®. In addition to a daunting array of desserts, guests enjoyed a spectacular view of Disney's "Epcot ® Illuminations: Reflections of Earth," a multi-media show combining video, fountains, lasers, other special lighting effects, and fireworks, all choreographed to an original score. It was an exciting, sold-out evening.
"We sold every one of the available tickets, with the proceeds going to a great cause," said Eric Tangalos, MD, who headed the fundraising effort this year. "Our thanks to everyone who gave their support, including our presenting supporter - scienceofsleep.net, a new online resource from Takeda."

"Evening With Friends," which benefits the AGS Foundation for Health in Aging's Student Researcher Fund, raised enough to cover the travel expenses of 68 students who came to the 2005 meeting to present the results of their geriatrics research. Each year, the AGS accepts more than 100 student abstracts for presentation at the meeting, and students from all disciplines are eligible for financial assistance to defray travel costs.
"The idea," said Dr. Tangalos, "is to enable promising students to learn more about geriatrics from those who know it first-hand: AGS members. Our hope is that at least some in this talented group will ultimately decide geriatrics is the right specialty for them."
