There is a growing need for physicians who are trained to address the research and special health care needs of older patients. To address this need, The John A. Hartford Foundation and AFAR established the Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program. Since 1994, more than 700 individuals have received scholarships, encouraging medical students to consider an academic career in geriatrics by awarding short-term scholarships through a national competition. Students train at acclaimed centers of excellence in geriatrics and receive research, clinical and didactic training. A major component of the program is an opportunity for the students to present their research at the vibrant student poster session at the annual AGS meeting. Students who are sponsored through the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation and other students whose abstracts were accepted are also participating in this session. The Student Poster Session provides a unique opportunity for the students to present their research findings and network with each other, as well as with their mentors, geriatrics program directors and other leading geriatricians and scientists.
