The AGS/ASP T. Franklin Williams Research Scholars Award is a career development program aimed at junior level physician-scientist faculty at US academic medical (allopathic or osteopathic) institutions. To be eligible, the applicant must:
- have a MD or DO degree;
- be within four years of their first faculty appointment at the time the grant becomes effective (please note, for applicants who are in the process of securing a faculty position, a letter from their future Department Chair or Division Head must accompany the application asserting the institution's commitment to the applicant and when the faculty position will become effective);
- devote 75% of his or her time to conduct research related to improving the care of older adults with 40% specifically devoted to this project; and
- be an internal medicine geriatrician who has completed all of the requirements to be eligible to sit for a Certificate of Added Qualifications by the time the award commences (July 1, 2008).
2. Sponsorship
The applicant must have at least two sponsors who are committed to providing guidance and collaboration throughout the course of the proposed project. At least one sponsor should represent geriatrics and at least one sponsor should represent a subspecialty of internal medicine. The sponsors must:
- Have research experience and a successful record of providing academic career development guidance for junior faculty.
- Be on the faculty of the applicant's home institution.
- Be committed to continued involvement throughout the period of the project award.
Selection Committee members are not eligible to sponsor applicants during their tenure on the Selection Committee.
3. Research Interest
The applicant must:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to an academic career devoted to improving the care of older adults.
- Devote 75% of his/her professional time to the research on the care of older adults.
- Provide a research plan that focuses on research with older patients that is germane to subspecialty care of older adults.
4. Citizenship
An applicant must be a citizen or a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the United States. Applicants in temporary non-immigrant visa categories are not eligible.
5. Institutional Endorsement and Sponsorship
- Applicants must be sponsored at a US allopathic or osteopathic institution by two full-time faculty members, one in the division of geriatrics and one from any of the divisions of subspecialty internal medicine.
- Permission to apply for this award must be obtained by the applicant from the dean of the medical school. The dean may authorize the submission of no more than one application.
- Have a written commitment from his/her departmental chair or division chief that 75% of the applicant's time will be devoted to research.
