Eligibility Requirements
Q: I am an Instructor or Acting Assistant Professor. Am I eligible to apply for the Hartford Award?
A: Yes, Instructors, Acting Assistant Professors, and Assistant Professors may apply as long as they meet all of the other eligibility requirements.
Q: I understand that the Hartford Award is only open to citizens or permanent residents of the US. I am anticipating that my permanent resident status will be finalized by the start of the award, although I currently am not a permanent resident. Would I be eligible to apply, with the understanding that I would not receive funds until my residency status is finalized?
A: In order to apply, you must have written proof that you are a permanent resident.
Q: Must the included "publications" already be published, or could they also be manuscripts under review or in preparation?
A: Articles must be already published or accepted for publication.
Q: I have received the application and during my review, I noticed that a requirement was copies of 3 relevant scientific articles. As a junior investigator, I do not have 3 published articles. Does this exclude me from applying?
A: You may submit a maximum of 3 relevant published journal articles. You may submit your application with less than 3 publications.
Q: I have another award that supports my research project - can I also apply for the Hartford Award?
A: Additional funding does not preclude applying for this award, provided that the other funding augments your ability to conduct your proposed trial (e.g., allows for recruitment of a larger sample, or additional analyses). Additional funding could be used to support another project. However, in this case, the applicant must state how s/he will ensure that a significant portion of the required 75% protected research time will be devoted to the project proposed in this application. Applicants who have an external individual research career development award (i.e., a K08 or K23 Award) that specifies 75% protected time are not eligible to receive this award. GACA recipients are not excluded from applying.
Q: For the letter from the department chairperson or division head stating that at least 75% of my time will be devoted to the proposed research project, should the 75% of time be on this project only, or all research projects?
A: You must have 75% of your time devoted to working on research, including the Hartford Outcomes Project. You may work on other projects and you may have other funders, but the percentage of you time set aside to work on research needs to be 75%.
Sponsors
Q: Does my sponsor have to be a geriatrician or geropsychiatrist?
A: No, however your sponsor must meet all of the requirements specified in the "Sponsorship" section of the application brochure.
Q: Can I have 2 people "co-sponsor" me or should I just select one person to be the "sponsor"?
A: One person should be designated as your primary sponsor. You may use the term Co-Sponsor for all other members of your mentoring team.
Q: My sponsor is also my department chair/division head. Can he/she write one letter for my application?
A: It would be acceptable for the sponsor who happens to be a chair/division head to write a single letter that covered their role as sponsor, including a mentoring plan, and also covered their role as a department chair/division head by stating his or her commitment to assuring the requisite 75% protected time for the applicant’s research.

Q: I feel it would be helpful for the reviewers to have access to the tools that I refer to in my research proposal. Would it be possible to include these tools as Appendices?
A: Yes, providing measurement tools or educational materials that will help the Advisory Committee better understand the research proposal may be included in an appendix. However, applicants who attempt to use the appendix to circumvent the 6-page limit for the proposal may have their application disqualified. Please carefully review the instructions for what the 6-page proposal must include. Please note that references and appendices do not count against the 6-page limitation for the proposal.
Q: Should my CV and my sponsor's CV be in traditional CV format or NIH-style biosketch format?
A: The sponsor's CVs should be submitted in NIH-style biosketch format. However, it is not necessary that the applicant's CV be in NIH-style biosketch format.

A: No. Please observe the difference in requirements for margins specified in the instructions between the PHS-398 form and this application.
