March FHA e-newsletter: Special Edition on Caregiving
March is National Family Caregivers Month! The American Geriatrics Society Foundation for Health in Aging expresses its gratitude for the 44 million Americans who care for older parents, in-laws, grandparents and other older loved ones, as well as those professionals who choose to make elder caregiving their career, and the organizations that employ and train.

The 2010 caregiving awards and scholarship opportunities honor caregivers and the indispensable work they do day-in and day-out, providing quality care to older adults.

Mattie J. T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarship
The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving Mattie J. T. Stepanek Caregiving Scholarship provides financial assistance to family, professional, or paraprofessional caregivers of any age who are seeking training or education in specific skills, procedures and strategies that lead to more effective care at the same time that they serve to protect the health and well-being of the caregiver.

Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded. Deadline for application is June 1, 2010. More details and the application form are available online.

Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award
Named in honor of a great humanitarian, The Rosalynn Carter Leadership in Caregiving Award is the highest award given in the caregiving field. This award recognizes leadership in implementing innovative partnerships between community agencies and caregiving researchers that bridge the gap between science and practice. These partnerships help disseminate effective caregiver support programs quickly and efficiently.

The award-winning team will be announced at the RCI's National Summit, scheduled for October 20-22, at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. The award-winning team will receive an award of $20,000 to support its efforts in implementing effective caregiver interventions at the community level.

The Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award
The Schwartz Center seeks nominations for its 2010 Compassionate Caregiver AwardŽ, established in 1999 to honor Massachusetts caregivers who display extraordinary compassion in caring for patients and their families.

One winner and four finalists will be recognized at the Schwartz Center's annual dinner on November 16, in Boston, Massachusetts. The winner will receive a $5,000 prize, and the finalists will receive $1,000 each. Eligible candidates are: employed caregivers, or teams of caregivers, who care for patients in any setting where patients receive care in the state of Massachusetts. Deadline: April 16. The Mississippi Health Care Association Caregiver Award
The Mississippi Health Care Association (MHCA) will recognize staff who substantially enhance the quality of life for residents with its annual Caregiver Award. Six area award winners will be honored at a luncheon on August 18. One will be selected as the statewide Caregiver of the Year. Deadline: June 1. Details and application are available here.

Pulmonary Hypertension Association Outstanding Caregiver Award
The Outstanding Caregiver award is given to someone who focuses their efforts on the needs of a loved one with pulmonary hypertension and does their best to ensure the patient has the best quality of life possible. Deadline: April 1. Details and application are available online.

National Center for Assisted Living Noble Caregiver in Assisted Living Award
This award recognizes professional caregivers for contributions that lead to improved quality of life for residents and an improved work environment for assisted living staffers. Eligible applicants are caregivers from any department. Direct care staff from nursing (does not include licensed nurses), housekeeping, dietary, activities/recreation, laundry, and maintenance departments, among others, are eligible to apply. 2010 Linda Andersen Caregiver Scholarship
The 2010 Linda Andersen Caregiver Scholarship award recognizes a professional caregiver for seniors or adults with disabilities who has been working in the field for a minimum of 2 years. The applicant can work in any home, community or healthcare setting either for an agency or independently as long as he or she is 18 years of age or older and is a legal resident of Vermont. The scholarship is for $1,000 and must be used towards education or training related to the caregiver field. More details and applications are available online.

The National Association of Health Care Assistants 2010 "Key to Quality" Awards
The National Association of Health Care Assistants (NAHCA) recognizes exceptional NAHCA members working as caregivers to benefit long-term care and improve the quality of life of residents and staff.

The awards are made each year at the NAHCA's Annual "Key to Quality" Awards Banquet, which will be held Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 PM. Deadline for nominations: March 20. For more information and a nomination form, see website.

2010 Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing Contest
The 2010 Extraordinary Healer Awards honor oncology nurses. Nominations should be made by one person-a current/former patient, caregiver, or peer-to honor a single oncology nurse. Submit a 400- to 1000-word essay detailing how your nurse helped you. Three finalists will receive round-trip airfare from a major airport in the continental United States and accommodations for two nights for themselves and one guest each so they can attend the awards reception in San Diego. At the reception, finalists will read their essay aloud and be present when a winner is awarded. The winning essay will be published in a 2010 issue of CURE. The nurse who is awarded the 2010 CURE Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing will receive a special gift in recognition of his or her service to cancer patients and survivors. Prizes have no cash value. If finalists are unable to attend the reception, they forfeit all winnings. Deadline: April 5.

2010 MetLife Foundation/ National Alliance for Caregiving National Family Caregiving Awards
The 2010 MetLife Foundation/ National Alliance for Caregiving National Family Caregiving Awards recognize the work of non-profit organizations that support family caregivers. The awards are intended to improve the quality of life of family caregivers by recognizing and supporting the efforts of non-profit community groups that work with them. The nine awards will recognize the current work of community agencies and other organizations that support family caregivers as a significant part of their mission. Only established family caregiving programs will be considered for a National Family Caregiving Award. Applications that are written as grant proposals will not considered for an award. Each of the nine awards will carry a cash value of $20,000. Deadline for Submissions: May 7. More information and details available online.
