Diabetes Warning Signs and Symptoms

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • Frequent urination (sometimes as often as every hour)
  • Unusual weight loss or weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of energy
  • Wounds that heal slowly
  • Foot sores
  • Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Sexual dysfunction

Not everyone with diabetes has these symptoms. Many people can have diabetes for years without any clear symptoms at all. In fact, about half of older adults with type 2 diabetes don’t even know that they have it.

If you have diabetes but don’t have any symptoms, you are still at higher risk for many serious diseases. That’s why it is so important to have regular blood sugar tests. It’s the only way to know for sure whether or not you have diabetes.
