Menopausal Symptoms
Some women have stronger menopause symptoms than others. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following symptoms. Treatments can help. Vaginal Dryness
Women with vaginal dryness can:
- Use water-based lubricants such as K-Y Jelly
- Avoid douching. It can dry the vagina and cause infections.
- Stay sexually active. It can help prevent thinning and inflammation of the vaginal walls.
- Use low-dose estrogen creams, rings, or tablets placed in the vagina. This can reduce discomfort during sex, and lower risks of urinary problems.
Hot Flashes
Hot flashes are common during menopause. Ways to help include :
- Keeping rooms cool
- Wearing light, breathable clothing
- Dressing in layers that can be taken off when hot flashes happen
- Drinking cold drinks
- Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol
- Reducing stress
If hot flashes cause problems with sleep, mood or daily activities, some supplements or medicines may help.
Hormone Therapy
Hormone therapy uses estrogen or progesterone to help reduce menopause symptoms. These hormones can be taken as pills or patches.
Hormone therapy is not right for everyone. It should be considered based on a patient’s age and medical history. Women under age 60 or within 10 years of menopause usually are the best candidates for this therapy. Healthcare providers should aim to prescribe the lowest dose that is effective for the shortest amount of time needed, typically no more than about 5 years.
Talk with a healthcare provider about the risks and benefits. The risks and benefits are related to a woman’s:
- Symptoms
- Age
- Time since menopause
- Other health conditions
- Family health history
