Take steps to keep your heart as healthy as possible, whether or not you have a valve problem. Heart-healthy lifestyle steps include:
- Quitting smoking
- Getting enough physical activity (see the fact sheet from Health.gov on physical activity for older adults)
- Reaching a healthy weight
- Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and low in fat
- Managing stress
If you have been diagnosed with a heart valve problem, talk with your healthcare provider about how much and what type of physical activity is safe for you. If your valve is severely damaged, your provider may recommend that you avoid strenuous activity so you don't overwork your heart.
