Lifestyle & Management
There is currently no effective cure for wet ARMD for 75 percent of people with the diagnosis. If you are one of them, it is most important to remember that this disease will not cause blindness, and that people with untreatable wet ARMD can continue to live independently. Though you may lose central vision, you will continue to have side vision.
Vision rehabilitation can help you make the most of the vision you have. Your healthcare provider or ophthalmologist can help you find vision rehabilitation services. These services are often offered by a team that includes an ophthalmologist, occupational therapist, other healthcare professionals with expertise in working with people with low-vision, social workers, and others. Many devices can help, such as special magnifying glasses and video magnifiers. Strategies for using lighting in ways that maximize your vision can also help.
Other lifestyle modifications that may be helpful are quitting smoking and eating a diet that includes fruits, green leafy vegetables, fish, and nuts.
