Several tests can detect influenza (flu) viruses from a patient’s sample. Tests done at a hospital or clinic are more accurate than those over the counter.
- The most common tests are rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs). These tests give results in 10–15 minutes. However, they may not be as accurate as other flu tests.
- Other flu tests include rapid molecular tests. These tests look for the genetic material of the flu virus. They give results in 15–20 minutes and are more accurate than rapid tests. Other more accurate tests require analysis in special labs.
