Care & Treatment

Antibiotic Premedication before Dental Treatment

Antibiotics are not usually needed before dental care. However, some older adults at high risk of heart infection (endocarditis) may need to take antibiotics before dental work that causes bleeding.

Oral Hygiene for Older Adults with Physical or Mental Disabilities

Daily mouth care is very important for older adults who need help from others. This includes people who live in assisted living or nursing homes. The main goals are to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth and check for any problems.

Brushing and flossing is ideal. But flossing can be hard to do for another person. Interdental (between-tooth) brushes are often easier to use than floss. An electric toothbrush with a standard head is a good option because the brush does most of the work.

Dentures should be removed before cleaning an older adult's mouth.

Palliative Dental Care

Palliative care focuses on quality of life and reducing suffering for people with serious or terminal illness. Mouth care is often overlooked at end of life, but it is still important. Preventing mouth infections and pain can improve an older adult's overall quality of life.

Some people may feel embarrassed about their appearance and avoid social contact, especially if they are missing teeth or dentures. There are simple solutions to improve a smile that can help a person feel dignified.
