During an oral health check, the health care provider will ask about dental problems, when you last saw a dentist, and if you have a dry mouth.
A full oral assessment will also check for:
- Sores, swelling, or tenderness in the mouth
- Tooth decay, plaque, tartar, and food buildup
- Whether you have natural teeth or dentures
- Problems with gums, cheeks, or tongue
If the provider finds any problems, they will refer you to a dentist for a full exam.
